Tammy H.
Tammy is originally from Fort Worth, Texas. Tammy decided to share her story with YOUtopian Estates to shed light on issues leading to homelessness. Tammy used was living by herself until she suffered from two strokes, an aneurysm, and two seizures. She then had to move in with her three sons. During the time she lived with her sons, she suffered from physical abuse due to their tempers and substance abuse issues. Her only daughter would try to protect her, but could not, so therefore to feel safer, Tammy was forced into homelessness.
Tammy was homeless before for one year and now she has been homeless for one month after escaping from her children. She is close with her aunt who she appreciates for supporting her always. She says “to have to tell people that my kids abused me is very embarrassing, so I definitely get a lot of counseling for it. I had to leave because I did not feel safe there, but it is not like it is safe on the streets for single women.” Tammy wants people to know to be kind to one another and that “there are a lot of good people who are homeless; a lot of people want to judge you because of where you are, but they just need to know [our] stories.”
Tammy praises YOUtopian Estates organization for its efforts to fight homelessness and help create a safe place for people to live. She states that “if I can just have somewhere safe to go, you guys can provide that, it will be like a heaven on earth.”
